San Pedro La Laguna Atitlan

San Pedro La Laguna, Guatemala

San Pedro La Laguna is one of the most visited towns on Lake Atitlán. Located on the southwest shore, at the foot of the San Pedro Volcano (3,020 meters above sea level), this Tz'utujil municipality blends traditional indigenous life with a bohemian international scene unique in Central America: Spanish schools, specialty coffee shops, creative hostels, and a vibrant cultural offering make San Pedro one of the most dynamic destinations on the lake.

What to do in San Pedro La Laguna?

  • Hike San Pedro Volcano: the most popular climb on the lake (4 to 6 hours round trip). From the crater, you get views of the three volcanoes and the entire lake. A local guide hired in town is required (Q100–Q150 per person).
  • Spanish Schools: San Pedro is one of the best destinations in Latin America to learn Spanish. Schools offer individual classes with native teachers at very competitive prices, many with accommodation with local families included.
  • Specialty Coffee: coffee production from the volcano's foothills supplies several third-wave coffee shops in town. San Pedro La Laguna coffee is among the most sought-after in the entire lake region.
  • Beach and Swimming: several sections of the dock area have volcanic beaches for swimming and sunbathing with the volcanoes as a backdrop.
  • Kayaking Around the Volcano: from San Pedro, it's possible to kayak around the base of the volcano to San Marcos La Laguna in about 3 hours with unique views from the water.
  • Nightlife: San Pedro has the largest offering of bars and restaurants on the south shore, with live music several days a week.

How to get to San Pedro La Laguna?

From Panajachel, direct collective boats depart several times a day from the public dock. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes and costs Q25–Q35. From Santiago Atitlán, the boat takes 15 to 20 minutes. By road from Guatemala City, the journey is 3.5 hours, passing through San Lucas Tolimán.

Tz'utujil Culture

San Pedro has two distinct sectors: the upper town—where the Tz'utujil community lives with its cofradías, language, and textiles—and the lake area, which concentrates the tourist offerings. Hiring a local cultural guide allows for a deeper understanding of the municipality and a visit to the active weaving cooperatives in the upper town.

Where to eat and stay

San Pedro has the widest variety of accommodation on the south shore: backpacker hostels from Q80 per night, family guesthouses, and boutique hotels with lake views. The gastronomy mixes traditional Tz'utujil cuisine, vegetarian options, and international restaurants. For additional options, hotels in Panajachel are the most extensive reference on the lake.

When to visit San Pedro La Laguna

San Pedro is an active destination throughout the year. The dry season (November–April) is ideal for volcano climbing and water activities. For paragliding in Atitlán, San Pedro and its surroundings offer excellent wind conditions from October to May.
