Santa Catarina Palopó, Guatemala

Santa Catarina Palopó is the closest municipality to Panajachel on the shore of Lake Atitlán, just 8 kilometers by paved road. In recent years, this small Kaqchikel town has become one of the most photographed in Guatemala thanks to its turquoise, blue, and green murals—the colors of the lake—which cover over 600 houses, stairs, and walls with patterns inspired by the municipality's traditional huipil.

What to see in Santa Catarina Palopó?

  • The town's murals: In 2020, local artists and external collaborators painted the entire municipality with Kaqchikel weaving designs. The result is one of the most photographed streets in Central America and a benchmark for community urban art in Guatemala.
  • Church of Santa Catarina: A 17th-century colonial temple with a Guatemalan Baroque facade, dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria. One of the best preserved in the entire lake basin.
  • Kaqchikel textiles: The women of the town weave blue and turquoise huipiles with geometric designs exclusive to the municipality. The artisan workshops welcome visitors.
  • Lake viewpoint: The boardwalk offers direct views of San Pedro Volcano and Atitlán Volcano with spectacular reflections at sunrise and sunset.
  • Hotel Atitlán: One of the lake's historic hotels, with botanical gardens, a private dock, and a collection of Guatemalan art. Its restaurant allows non-guests with prior reservation.

How to get to Santa Catarina Palopó?

The easiest way is by tuk-tuk or taxi from Panajachel (Q25–Q40, 15 minutes along the eastern lakeside road). There are also pickups and vans from the Panajachel market several times a day. The road runs alongside the lake with continuous views of the water and volcanoes.

From Santa Catarina, you can continue another 8 km to San Antonio Palopó, whose craft market and traditional attire are equally renowned in the region.

Experiential tourism and weaving workshops

Several cooperatives in the town offer backstrap loom weaving workshops for visitors. In 2 to 3 hours, you learn the fundamentals of Kaqchikel weaving and take home a piece made with your own hands. Some projects also include demonstrations of natural dyes using indigo and zacate on organic cotton.

Where to eat and stay

Santa Catarina has family eateries around the square and the Hotel Atitlán restaurant (reservations recommended). For more variety in accommodation, hotels in Panajachel allow you to visit Santa Catarina as an afternoon excursion. There are also family guesthouses in the town at very affordable prices.

Festivities

The patron saint's fair is celebrated on November 25th in honor of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Folk dances, artisan fireworks, and the procession through the painted streets create a unique festive atmosphere throughout the lake region.
