San Marcos La Laguna Atitlan
San Marcos La Laguna, Guatemala
San Marcos La Laguna is Lake Atitlán's yoga, wellness, and spirituality destination. Located on the northern shore, between Santa Cruz La Laguna and San Pablo La Laguna, this small Kaqchikel municipality has become one of the most renowned meditation and holistic therapy centers in all of Central America, without losing its essence as a tranquil and magical lakeside village.
Things to do in San Marcos La Laguna
- Yoga and meditation: San Marcos is famous for its long-term spiritual retreats. Las Pirámides del Ka is the best-known meditation center on the lake, offering 7- and 21-day courses. Other spaces like San Marcos Holistic Center offer daily yoga classes for walk-in visitors.
- San Marcos Natural Reserve: The municipality's riparian forest features trails among lianas and tropical vegetation, a sacred Mayan cave, and viewpoints with lake views. It is one of the best-preserved natural areas on the northern shore.
- Trail to Santa Cruz La Laguna: A 2 km pedestrian path follows the lake shore between San Marcos and Santa Cruz La Laguna, passing through dense vegetation with constant views of the water and San Pedro Volcano.
- Alternative therapies: Ayurvedic massages, cacao ceremonies, Mayan temazcal, and reiki and sound sessions are available in multiple locations at affordable prices.
- Walk along the docks and gardens: The lakeside path among lodging options, hidden cafes in the vegetation, and tropical gardens makes San Marcos one of the best places for a leisurely stroll around the entire lake.
San Marcos La Laguna Natural Reserve
The San Marcos La Laguna Natural Reserve protects the Kaqchikel riparian forest on the northern shore. Unlike the more visited Cerro Tzankujil Reserve in Santa Cruz, the San Marcos Reserve is wilder and less crowded. Its trails offer opportunities to observe quetzals, toucans, hummingbirds, and wild orchids during the blooming season (October–January).
How to get to San Marcos La Laguna?
The only access is by boat from Panajachel. North route collective boats depart from the public dock every 30 to 60 minutes. The journey takes approximately 25 minutes and costs Q25. You can also arrive from Santa Cruz La Laguna in 10 minutes by boat, or walk the 2 km lakeside trail connecting both villages.
The community of San Marcos
San Marcos has two coexisting realities: the upper Kaqchikel village with its traditional life and cofradías (religious brotherhoods), and the lake area where the international community of residents who came for spiritual retreats and stayed to live is concentrated. This mix creates a unique atmosphere: painting workshops, cacao circles, organic markets, and experimental music coexist with Kaqchikel weaving and the village's community life.
Where to eat and stay
San Marcos has a surprisingly good culinary offering for its size: vegetarian and vegan restaurants, specialty cafes with lake views, and international cuisine. For accommodation, there are options ranging from simple cabins in gardens with hammocks to luxury retreats with spa treatments included. For more variety, Panajachel hotels are a 25-minute boat ride away.
When to visit San Marcos La Laguna
San Marcos is a year-round destination. The dry season (November–April) offers better conditions for hiking and kayaking. If you're looking for a spiritual retreat, many centers offer discounts during the low season (May–October). For birdwatching, the rainy season (August–October) coincides with orchid blooming and increased bird activity.
